Prunus virginiana
Choke cherries are well-named and not hard to identify. Many people in this area pick them to make either jelly or wine.  They have little other purpose because they are extremely bitter/sour.  The choke cherry is a small shrub about 5-feet tall or higher.  Actually, there are two kinds, the red-fruit choke cherry and the black-fruit choke cherry.  They are all but impossible for the average person to identify until the berries mature.  When this happens the black-fruit berries will turn black and the red-fruit berries will remain red.

Warning: Choke cherries contain poisonous hydrocyanide acid in their seed pits, leaves and bark.  Only the fleshy part of the fruit should be used.
