Tricholoma flavovirens

Man on Horseback can be found scattered or in large groups under pine trees in sandy areas in autumn.  It is considered a very good edible mushroom by many 'schroom hunters.  There are a few mushrooms that are similar, but the MoH is easily identified from them.

Warning: There are many reports of poisoning in Europe where the MoH is a highly sought an eaten mushroom.  The poisoning causes myoglobin to leak out of the muscles and into the blood.  This iron containing pigment can then lead to kidney failure if untreated.  Symptoms include muscle weakness, heavy sweating, and nausea.

However, there is a question as to whether the European MoH (
Tricholoma equestre) is the same as the North American MoH (Tricholoma flavovirens) since there have been no reports of poisoning in the U.S.  It is also noted that every case of MoH poisoning came after eating MoH consecutively over several meals.
Whatever, the option of eating MoH is yours.
