Lepiota rachodes

The shaggy parasol tends to grow under conifers during late summer and autumn.  Although it would first appear to be an easily identifiable mushroom, it is not.  There are several deadly mushrooms that resemble the shaggy parasol.  Do not attempt to pick this mushroom unless you have positively identified it.

This is a fairly large mushroom and its cap can be over 6" in diameter.  The top of the cap is a very light tan with darker scales.  The cream- or buff-colored top surface is decorated with crisp dark scales arranged in concentric rings or in interrupted patterns. Characteristically the color becomes orange to red-brown when the stem is cut or the tissues are bruised.

L. rachodes should never be eaten raw as it can bring on severe stomach reactions.  Also, some people have unpleasant, but usually minor, reactions to this mushroom even when it is cooked.  It is recommended that you eat only a very small portion first to see if you are in this group.
