Lepiota americana Lepiota Americana
Leucoagaricus americanus

This edible mushroom is found in our area during summer through early fall.  It can be found growing singly or in fairly large groups on sawdust piles, wood chips, or stumps.  The pulpwood industry makes our area a friendly place for this mushroom.  If its stem is rubbed, it will turn yellow, then reddish.  It also has a scaly top.  This is not a mushroom for novices to pick.

Warning: This mushroom can be misidentified with various poisonous members of the deadly Amanita family.  It can also be confused with Chlorophyllum molybdites even though this mushroom does not bruise yellow to reddish when its stem is rubbed.
