Oyster Mushroom
Pleurotus ostreatus

The oyster mushroom is a highly sought edible mushroom in this area.  It is found in groups on dead hardwood trees from summer through autumn.  However, it seems as though it is more apt to be found around here in the autumn.  They also seem to be better tasting in autumn.

Warning:  There are a couple similar mushrooms, but they are not known to be poisonous.  However, they will certainly spoil your meal.  Lentinellus ursinus, has a very bitter taste.  The other is a Crepidotus which is not poisonous either, but not one that is considered edible.
