Gem-studded Puffball Gem-Studded Puffball
Lycoperdon perlatum

This is a short puffball with an off-white top covered with little bumps.  It is considered edible when young, but the edibility rapidly deteriorates as it ages.  The interior must be solid white.  If there is any other deviation in color or solidness it should be considered inedible.  This mushroom tends to grow in "woodsy" areas, but can be found in openings near woods.

Warning: This mushroom must be cut open to make sure it is not a young Amanita.   The Destroying Angel (Amanita virosa), and the Death Cap, (Amanita phalloides) are very similar when young.  These two Amanitas are extremely poisonous and well-named.
