False Morel False Morel
Gyromitra esculenta

We have included the false morel here because some people do eat it.  We recommend you do not.  Many people have become violently ill and even died because of this mushroom.  There are other false morels, but this one is the most common in our area.  Although it is listed on the main page, we do not rate it.

It is extremely poisonous if eaten raw. The active poison is gyromitrin which destroys the red blood cells, damages the nervous system, and is very toxic to the liver.  People attempt to get rid of the poison by boiling the mushroom.   This releases the gyromitrin into the air.  Many people have become violently ill or died because they inhaled the fumes while boiling the mushrooms.

Warning: This is not a mushroom to play games with.  People who eat it are only fooling themselves and, sooner or later, will pay heavy consequences.
